Experience of the Neurosurgery Service of Centro Medico Docente La Trinidad in minimally invasive procedures of the lumbar spine

Minimally invasive spine surgery offers benefits such as reduced postoperative pain, decreased hospital stay and rapid recovery. Objective: To describe the experience of the CMDLT neurosurgery service in minimally invasive procedures of the lumbar spine performed with the Maxcess III, in patients operated on between June 2018 and June 2023. Methods: A retrospective, observational investigation was carried out. with a non-experimental, cross-sectional design; By reviewing the medical records, pre-surgical signs and symptoms grouped into the visual analogue scale (VAS) of pain and the Oswestry disability index (ODI) were known; the pre-surgical diagnosis, the type of intervention and surgical time, days of hospitalization, subsequently the intra- and post-operative complications, finally the clinical improvement and functional results with the VAS and the ODI at the patient's discharge. Results: 85 patients were studied, the majority were between 51 and 60 years old, VAS predominated 8pts and severe disability in the pre-surgical ODI, foraminal stenosis and L5S1 disc herniation was the most common diagnosis, foraminotomies and discectomies were the most common. The intervention that was performed the most, with an average time of 2 hours and 30 minutes per surgery, the average hospitalization time was 2 days. The most frequent complications were incidental dural rupture and disc reherniation; 80% showed improvement from VAS 8 to VAS 1-2 and 31.8% reported being without disability at discharge. Conclusions: Minimally invasive lumbar spine surgery with MaxcessÒretractor produced good postoperative results, with a low complication rate, decreased surgical time and rapid patient recovery.
